The Unknown Warriors

By the start of 1943 the 1st Battalion of the Green Howards were making progress in their epic journey from India as part of the 15th Brigade, heading towards Egypt. They arrived on the shores of occupied Sicily on the 10th July 1943. As I type this today, it is exactly 70 years ago since they were involved in intense fighting. Using the wonderful Commonwealth War Graves Commission website I have been able to compile a roll of honour of those that never made it home.

Before doing this I only knew two names; Martin Durkin, my grandma's brother and the famous England & Yorkshire cricketer Hedley Verity. Most of the lads were from places like Newcastle, Middlesborough, Sunderland, Darlington, Scarborough and small towns in the North East & North Yorkshire area. Those killed in July and August are buried in Catania & Syracuse war cemetries in Sicily. Soldiers killed on the Italian mainland later in the year lie in Bari and Sangro River cemetries. A few are buried in places like Malta, likely dying from their wounds after being taken to military hospitals. Others, like my great uncle, have no known grave and are remembered on the Cassino memorial.

It is important to point out that this is just the 1st Battalion, other battalions of the Green Howards fought just as bravely in Italy and lie in the same cemetries.
